Outfit Prep:
- Plan your outfits and what you're going to do for hair and makeup at least a week in advance. I am always happy to provide outfit assistance! Check out my favorite outfit vibes on my Pinterest board here.
- On the topic of outfits - I always recommend going with neutral tones that will stand the test of time. Avoid brand names, logos, sweatshirts and anything with writing on it.
- Opt for comfort! Go with something flowy and breathable. Functionality is important too! Make sure you can move around, sit down comfortably, etc. Choose something that makes you feel beautiful.
Practical Tips:
- Remind everyone to take bulky items like phones out of their pockets!
- Make sure everyone gets a good night of rest before the session.
- Snacks for the kiddos are always a good idea! While I shoot mostly candids, I am not above bribery when necessary when it comes to getting the littles to cooperate for those posed shots most families want 😉 Just make sure any snacks won't stain lips or fingers!
Communication with Kiddos:
- Let your kiddos know that you will be going to see your friend Sarah! We're gonna be hanging out and playing and having fun.
Special Touches:
- Think about any special items or memories you'd like to include in your family photos. Maybe it's a piece of grandma's heirloom jewelry, your child's favorite stuffed animal, or a beautiful keepsake quilt.
- If there's a particular shot you've been dreaming of, send me an example and let's bring it to life.
Photography Style & Approach:
- As I mentioned - I shoot mostly candid! I absolutely love photographing the kids playing in the water, making sand castles, climbing trees, and being happy little earth children. That said, it's never a bad idea to bring the kiddos a change of clothes, and maybe even a towel.
- Don't feel like you need to force a smile or say "cheese." Instead, play! laugh! tickle! Make jokes with each other. This makes for much more natural, beautiful images.
- Try to forget the camera is there. Don't worry, I'll be guiding you every step of the way, prompting you with each next move. I love to say, snuggle up and snuggle in. Keep each other warm. This is my favorite prompt for family photos.
