The adventurous, nature loving people whom I tend to work with know that there is nothing quite like the beauty of the outdoors as the backdrop for their photo session.
But taking to the outdoors does come with a level of responsibility, which is where the Leave No Trace (LNT) principles come in. Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast or a couple planning your outdoor adventure elopement, these guidelines are helpful to remember:
1. Plan Ahead and Prepare
Know the weather, trail conditions, and what gear to bring. I always take responsibility for providing my clients with all the information they need, whether it’s about the weather, trails, or necessary gear. I advise my couples to dress in layers, bring plenty of water, and maybe some snacks, so we’re prepared for whatever the day throws our way.
2. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
I know that sometimes the perfect shot seems just off the trail, but sticking to designated paths helps protect the land—and us! There's a lot of poison oak, and many areas have sudden, steep drop-offs. Sand, stone, and established trails are our best friends.
3. Dispose of Waste Properly
Pack it in, pack it out. I will always make sure our group leaves no trace of our visit.
4. Leave What You Find
We capture the beauty without disturbing it, ensuring others can enjoy it just as we did.
5. Minimize Campfire Impact
If a campfire is part of a photo session, it's best to keep it small and always ensure it’s completely out before leaving.
6. Respect Wildlife
Always keep a respectful distance and never feed or disturb animals. Enjoy their presence without impacting them.
7. Be Considerate of Other Visitors
Whether it’s letting other visitors take in the view or respecting park rules and permits, we aim to be good neighbors.
Navigating Controversies and Criticisms
While the Leave No Trace principles are important, there’s been some controversy, especially when it comes to public shaming over unintentional mistakes. I believe in kindness and education over criticism. If you see someone not following the principles, a friendly, private message can go a long way in spreading awareness.
It's also important to recognize that some LNT principles might conflict with traditional practices of Indigenous communities. These communities have interacted respectfully with the land for centuries, engaging in activities like gathering plants, hunting, and conducting ceremonies. Their practices were deeply rooted in a sustainable relationship with the environment, ensuring that the land remained healthy and vibrant for future generations.
I believe in respecting these traditions and finding a balance that honors both conservation and cultural practices. There's so much we can learn from the Indigenous ways of life, especially when it comes to living in harmony with nature. Their lifestyle of yesteryear offers valuable lessons on sustainability and respect for the natural world. By understanding and appreciating these traditions, we can all contribute to preserving the beauty and integrity of our shared environment.
